Brief Answer: Can take several weeks. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for posting your query. The broken ankle with a torn ligament may need a surgical fixation of the fractured fragments. A fractured ankle can range from a simple break in one bone, which may not stop you from walking, to several fractures, which forces your ankle out of place and may require that you not put weight on it for a few months. The mode and time taken for recovery depends on the type and site of fracture. Usually it takes 16-20 weeks for a complete recovery in case both the malleoli are broken with displacement. Initially, most ankle fractures are placed in a splint to protect your ankle and allow for the swelling to go down. After that, you may be put into a cast or removable brace. Even after the fracture has healed, your physician may recommend wearing an ankle brace for several months while you are doing daily activities. I hope this answers your query. Simple fracture but can't get cast until swelling comes down my dr says. Could be 2 weeks. Is it normal for there to be such severe swelling and still a lot of pain ? It's been week since injury. Per md no weight bearing . Is this the norm?

Brief Answer: You are getting the right treatment. Detailed Answer: Hello. Thanks for writing again. Yes. Sometimes it takes 2 weeks for the swelling to reduce. You need to avoid bearing weight and keep the foot elevated on two pillows for the swelling to decrease. If a cast is put on the swollen foot it will become loose once the swelling subsides. The pain will decrease after a cast is put as it will provide complete immobilization of the fractured fragment. Hope my answer is helpful. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish you good health. Regards
