Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for sending the question.

There are several different considerations when considering what might be causing swelling of the lower extremities.

1 possible cause is dysfunction in the functional capacity of your heart. This can sometimes cause a backup of fluid in the system which creates swelling in the lower extremities. This is sometimes referred to as congestive heart failure. The best way to assess for this would be to have a good physical examination. Your Dr. might also request an echocardiogram. If your doctor thinks it is appropriate he or she might provide a diuretic for blood pressure medication.

Another possible cause of swelling would be a dysfunction in your heart rate. This can sometimes happen in patients of almost any age. For this reason it is very important that you visit with your primary care doctor for a good physical examination and possibly an electrocardiogram.

Another possible cause is medications. Sometimes certain medications can cause fluid retention or swelling of the legs or arms. This something you should discuss in great detail with your doctor.

Lastly it is important that you watch your total salt intake. If you consumed too much salt it can create a situation where your body will retain access fluids.

At this time I strongly urge you to make an appointment with your primary care doctor for a good focused physical examination and consultation. In this setting I think your doctor can help you focus on relieving your symptoms.

Thank you again for sending her question and I appreciate your sharing with us.

Sincerely,

Dr. G
