Question: I was gardening about 5 hours ago, got my share of thorns stuck here and there, nothing too painful, but now, hours later the joint on my right pointer finger is swollen and extremely painful.

I'm worried it might be a bite from a spider or worse and could lead to somethimg serious

Brief Answer:
Most likely it is inflammation due to thorn prick.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing healthcaremagic for posting your query

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

I have gone through your question in detail and understand your concern.

First possibility is inflammation due to thorns prick. It may have allergy to thorns. You can take anti inflammatory and analgesic such as ibuprofen. Antiallergic such as Cetrizine can also be taken.

Second possibility is insect bite including spider bite leading to allergic reaction. Its treatment is again analgesic such as ibuprofen for pain relief. Antiallergic such as cetrizine is useful. You can add antibiotics to control infection. Vitamin B and C is helpful in recovery. Active finger movements and elevation of hand is useful in reducing swelling. Rest to hand is advisable. If you have fever then let me know.

You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
