Brief Answer: it may also be sign of chronic heart failure etc Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for consulting HealthcareMagic! There are wide variety of conditions that can cause swollen ankles and legs which include venous insufficiency in veins of legs, blockade in lymphatic drainage, blood clots in the blood vessels of legs. Did not mean to scare you but, it may also be a sign of chronic heart failure, kidney malfunctioning, or liver failure which cause fluid retention in dependent parts of body particularly ankles and legs. Raise your legs above your heart while lying down may help but you need investigations to rule out all the above possibilities. Before that, a thorough physical examination is needed. Hope I have answered your query. If you are satisfied, you may now close the discussion and rate the answer.
