Suggest Treatment For Swollen Hands And Feet

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Jan 2017
Question: Hello and happy holidays. 2 days ago, I awoke to VERY swollen hands and feet. The swelling has worsened since then. It's very painful to walk up and down stairs. My calves are also swollen now. The skin is extremely tight. My feet hurt terribly. I had no signs of swelling two days ago. I am going to attach a picture of my foot. I'm worried that this came on all of a sudden. Getting around is very painful - barefoot, in flipflops, and in any other shoe - I tried orthodics too.I just finished a five day regimen of a broad spectrum antibiotics for an ongoing ear infection. I also just had a hemangioma removed. The site got inflamed and swollen, but now it's healing nicely. I would really appreciate your opinion. I am in a lot of pain.

Brief Answer:
List of suggestions which can help at home, otherwise visit ER ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. From your medical history I noticed that you were once diagnosed with compartment syndrome, is this still ongoing?

The syndrome if not managed adequately can present in a similar manner quite abruptly especially if there was some amount of compression while you were asleep last night. I would recommend the following:

+Oral diuretic (e.g. lasix also locally called the water pill)
+Pain management (tramadol which is already in your list of medications can be used)
+Elevate your legs while lying down
+Try to stretch your legs and keep moving your feet actively
+Reduce your salt intake
+Controlled fluid intake
+Use any anti-histamine available: just to make sure this is not an allergic reaction
+Wear loose comfortable clothing

If you can manage with the above given recommendations and can gain access to the medications I have mentioned above then fine, otherwise you can gain quick relief from the pain and swelling if you visit the ER as they can give you the lasix in injectable form which takes effect quicker than the pill/oral form.

I hope and pray you can find relief at the earliest. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
