Question: I have a friend, 85 years old. Broke upper leg with a fall in April past. Both her legs below the knee are very swollen. There are bumps and when I touch her leg it is bone hard. What could the cause be. She refuses to leave her house and go to the doctor.

Brief Answer:
Possible deep vein thrombosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi and Welcome.

This is serious symptom and it may be sign of deep vein thrombosis or heart failure, and in both cases, urgent medical attention is required.

Since it's untreated, it may lead to certain complications. She should keep the legs elevated, apply elastic compress and regulate blood pressure if she decides to be at-home (however I wouldn't recommend that and strongly suggest to call up urgent care or visit your nearest hospital for a prompt check-up and management accordingly).

Wish you good health.
Regards
