Question: My lower legs are swollen from poor veins. I was walking in brush and a sharp stick sscratched my lower left leg, small hole. A little bleeding but also clear fluid drained accasionally for several days. Now the area seems to be slowwly healing but with a green scab, not the usual red scab. Is this ok?

Brief Answer:
This is not OK...

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/77 - lower legs swelling from poor veins - sharp stick scratched lower left leg wile walking in bush - little bleeding - clear fluid drained occasionally for several days - area seems to be slowly healing - green scab - not the usual one - wants to know whether this is OK....

My thoughts:
Age, poor veins, lower leg swelling, scratch and clear fluid but green scab...
A bit to worry about as the green color is indicative of a bacterial infection.

I would advise you the following in such a case:
- Consult a Doctor and get the gram staining and culture and sensitivity of the fluid and/or scab to get the correct picture.
- Get started with a proper antibiotic.to avoid any complication.
- Elevation of the leg above the heart level in lying down position is the best way to get the reduction of edema, inflammation and faster healing.
- Take Multivitamins as they help as an antibiotic and helps faster healing.

I hope this answers your query and also helps you an early and proper recovery. Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
