Question: My grandson fell and hit his nose and mouth on a bigger lion walking type toy, nose was bleeding, and lip is swollen. Should I take him to a doctor, no noticable swelling around his nose.

Hello and welcome,

Sorry he bonked himself. If his nose is still bleeding, or if there is any question that his teeth may have been loosened by the trauma to nose and mouth, then yes, do take him in to be seen now.

Ice, as you are doing, for the swollen lip, is advisable.

I don't want to say to put pressure on the bloody nose, as I don't know if there was internal damage to the bone/cartilage. If there is that type of injury, there isn't much a doctor can do initially. That it isn't swollen is a good sign though. However, if there continues to be blood in the secretions from his already runny nose, then do take him in as continued bleeding can be addressed in an urgent care, ER, or doctor's office.

I hope this information helps.

is there anything specific I need to watch out for as a sign or symptom that I definitely need to bring him in, outside of what you mentioned in your previous response? Thanks so much for your insight.

I would watch for:

If he is having increased difficulty breathing through his nose due to swelling (I've noted that there does not appear to be much swelling on the outside, but watch of trouble with breathing beyond his difficulty from having a cold).

Any bleeding from the mouth, pain with eating (tongue or teeth).

If the swollen lip does not go down, or if you see a laceration there.

Regards
