Question: Hi I am from the east coast and I'm sure you have heard about our weather. I am 52 in decent health but since the amount of shoveling I have been doing my lower legs and ankles tend to swell up. The more I move the better they feel. Any advice. Thanks.. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Following causes to swollen lower legs&ankles...

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history and understood your concerns.

You are reporting to notice that your lower legs and ankles tend to swell up and are better when you move. With such clinical presentation I would come up with the following possibilities:
1. Blood clots
2. Venous insufficiency :leg's blood vessels/circulation problems
3. kidney/liver/heart problems especially if you have been having previous history of related issues.

If I was your caring doctor, I'd advise to run:
- a good physical examination of the legs
- Doppler ultrasound to evaluate the legs' blood circulation
- kidney function test, urine analysis and abdominal ultrasound to rule out kidney/liver problems

For the moment, I advise to:
- keep your feet well elevated especially when sleeping or during the day
- avoid standing on your feet for longer periods
- limit salt intake

Hope it was of help!
Dr.Albana
