default
Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: I accidently twanged my nipple with scissors while trimming chest hair.(I'm Male). Nothing cut,no infection,no rash.
Slight almost imperceptable swelling.. I went to my family Doc and he said nothing serious.. and advised putting a warm towel on it.. It's 4 days now and it's still tender and uncomfortable . Any other advice?

Brief Answer:
Looks like superficial skin infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same.
Now since you have developed some swelling in area touched by the scissors, there is a possibility that you had developed a small injury during that time which you might not have noticed.
Any minor skin wound can get infected and lead to localised discomfort and swelling.
You should apply a topical antibiotic cream like mupirocin or neosporin cream over the affected area twice a day for five to seven days.
Do not apply any other cream or oil over it.
I am sure the discomfort would settle with this.
However if in case, at any time you notice that the swelling or pain is increasing , then you might need to take oral anti inflammatory agent like paracetamol along with some antibiotics.

Dear Doctor XXXXXXX
Many thanks for the extra advise.. I have applied the antibiotic cream for the last two days twice a day and then covered it with a light plaster.
I've had to take paracetemol the last two days as the pain wakes me up..
The nipple itself is not the main culprit but it seems the nerves in the surrounding breast tissue are inflamed and the pain is circulating around there?
Also the skin surrounding the hurt nipple is quite a bit lighter than the other side.
The hurt nipple is still swollen and a slightly different colour that the other.
I do have anti-biotics in the house that I may use if it's not better by this weekend.
They are called AZITHROMYCIN 250 mg ..5 day dose
Would they be effective to take?
The pain is not really decreasing after one week so far... What do you advise?
Thank You

Brief Answer:
Need for antibiotics and anti inflammatory agents

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

I am understand that the discomfort is increasing even after application of the medicine which means that the infection is increasing.
You can start taking tablet azithromycin 250 mg once a day for the next five days. Continue applying the topical antibiotic cream. Take tablet paracetamol regularly twice a day.
The antibiotic course should help you, but if in case the swelling still continues to increase, then you will have to see your local doctor for a proper assessment.
