Question: hello doctor

I just have had a throat(tonsils) virus infection, and I feel much better, but just a little sensitive in the right tonsil yet. I normally don't look into my mouth; but I am very curious about what I see on the right site above my tonsil; and I want you to look at my pictures and see if everythings look normal. Looks like a tonsil above the tonsil; and I'm have just a little pain in that exact area.

I send you two pictures, it's exactly the same mouth; but the colour doesn't match; because of the camera quality.

Important to me, just to make sure it is not a tumour or something I see.

Brief Answer:
Normal tonsil tissue and crypts giving a lobulated appearance. Not tumour.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. The tissue in the images is normal tonsil tissue, separated by the normal tonsillar crypts.

2. The lobulated appearance is due to swelling and inflammation of the tonsils. This will settle down.

3. The largest tonsil crypt is the crypta magna near the upper pole of the tonsil which is deep enough to give a lobulated appearance near the upper pole in many people.

4. The are also small collections / islands of lymphoid tissue in many people near the tonsil.

5. This is not a tumour or cancer. Regular follow up will detect any problem. Cancers or tumours will keep increasing in size progressively.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

hello doctor :) I have one more question.

my troat infection started and lasted for aprox. 4-5 days; then everything become better and the fever started to go away; and after that the crypta magna started to appear; like we talked about last time; is was very sore at the beginning, and now it has started to be a little less sore and I gurgle salt water everyday and rinse my tongue well.

But I just wanted to know; for how long can this crypta magna be swollen before it becomes dangerous ? it has been swollen for like 5-6 days now; I feel healthy and don't feel sick in any way and it doesn't hurt while eating; but it's still like on the pictures a little big on the right side.

will this go away over time or do I need antibiotics ?
I don't wanna take antibiotics if I don't need to.

what can I do ?

Brief Answer:
No active treatment is required except regular observation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. This swelling seems to be resolving.

2. Hence you can avoid antibiotics at present.

3. The crypta magna swelling will never be dangerous, it may at the most cause some irritation or foreign body sensation. Many people have no symptoms.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

So it's quite normal to have this condition ?

and can I have this condition for few more days or even weeks; without worrying about any other Complications ? or when is it time to see a doctor for treatment ?

Brief Answer:
Yes, this is normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1 Yes, this is normal.

2. You can wait without fear of complications. Complications cause additional symptoms, such as increased pain, fever, swelling and so on.

3. This should subside in a couple of weeks. If it does not, visit your doctor again.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
