default
Posted on Wed, 14 Dec 2016
Question: Friday night after dinner I had severe upper abd pain, it went away. Sat night about 12:30am it came back and I began vomiting. I was very uncomfortable until about 10am sunday and then just slightly. This morning I am very uncomfortable again. I have not eaten today. I am having bowel movements that start solid and end loose. I also am burping and it tastes funny like it did years ago when someone told me I may have a hiatal hernia. not sure what to do?

Brief Answer:
GERD due to possible hiatus hernia

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) There might be possibility of hiatus hernia but your symptoms are consistent with GERD.
2) In this condition, esophagus-to-stomach junction become loose due to which stomach acid moves up into esophagus and produce inflammation (redness and swelling of inner layer) in lower part of esophagus.
3) Most common cause for development of GERD is hiatus hernia, i.e. weakening of diaphragm opening from which esophagus enter into abdomen causes upward migration of uppermost part of stomach into chest.
4) Upper GI endoscopy can confirm GERD as well as hiatus hernia
5) Treatment for GERD is medical i.e. medical treatment for acidity but large sized hiatus hernia require laparoscopic surgery.
6) This procedure is completely safe and had very good impact on symptoms.
