Question: I am a 65 yr old healthy female but got a common cold at Thanksgiving-it lasted 3 weeks-never any green or yellow discharge. I now have what I presume is a nasal drip from my sinuses that makes me sound like Marge Simpson--I am always clearing my throat-blow my nose occasionally but not a lot of discharge--cough occasionally and spit up clear phlegm. Side effect is that I feel tired! please advise what to do? Thank You, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
?? Allergic rhinitis requiring change in medication

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. It does sound like you could be suffering from allergic rhinitis which is why the fluticasone was also prescribed to you.

Fluticasone is used as the mainstay to help manage allergic rhinitis, but your issue seems to be that the drug is not suiting you well. So managing your case should mainly include substituting the fluticasone with other drugs, here are a few suggestions:

+Nasal decongesants: I recommend pseudoephedrine to be tried first from this group of drugs.
+Others: Oxymetazoline or xylometazoline are also very effective drugs but should be used for a shorter duration of time as compared to pseudoephedrine or fluticasone
+Anti-histamine: Azelastine is the most commonly prescribed anti-histamine for allergic rhinitis and is quite effective when used in combination with nasal steroids and/or nasal decongesants

Please do discuss the same with your prescribing doctor or pharmacist and initiate the medications, and I am sure you will find relief soon. Please also feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
