Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Anemia

Question: My hemoglobin is low and my hemocratic is just at 38 NEC is low and my erythropoietin is low. Could I have hemochromatosis and if so exactly what is it?

I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.

You have low hemoglobin and low hematocrit. It suggest anemia. However your erythropoitin level is also low.

This type of picture is commonly seen in anemia due to chronic disease like chronic kidney disease, rheumatoid arthritis etc.

Don't worry about hemochromatosis. Its totally different disease with iron overload.

You need some investigations like reticulocytes count, peripheral smear examination, kidney function test to search the cause.

Treatment depends on your hemoglobin level and other parameter. Erythropoitin injection or blood transfusion can help to improve the condition.

I'm not a woman I'm a63 yr old white male. My RBC was also low. I've had two transfusions about 4 yrs ago. They said having a transfusion could cause some of these conditions on my blood tests. I also received a letter saying I had a small decrease in my kidney function which they said was normal occurrence with age. My mother is 94 and has never been told that. Also was stated that it could be an inherited gene?

I'm aware of the fact that you are 63 year male.

You have history of blood transfusion but still you have low hemoglobin and low hematocrit with low erythropoitin level so it suggest anemia of chronic disease most likely.

Hemochromatosis is genetic disorder but in that there is iron overload, diabetes, liver disease etc. and its treatment is phlebotomy (Blood withdrawal). But you don't have any these kind of symptoms. You need blood or erythropoitin or blood transfusion to increase the hemoglobin. So its not hemochromatosis.

Still you should go for investigation to search the exact cause.

Your kidney may be normal and there may be other cause.

So go for investigation and give me follow up with your all reports.

Could I possibly have HIV infection?
