Brief Answer:
Please elucidate on bowel obstruction and give feedback

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/83 - some pain at waist - but not always - *signs of bowel obstruction - flat stool - normal color - no weight loss or other signs - recent health reports excellent - tried Dulcolax ...

May I please get some additional information for me to assist you further:
Please elucidate about *signs of bowel obstruction. (these are bloating, nausea, vomiting, pain, constipation)
Since when have you got this problem?
Does Dulcolax help you?
Is flat stool recent or of long duration?
Any history of Fissure/piles (hemorrhoids)/ anal surgery or so?

As per the history you have provided, the flat stool and pain at waist and signs of bowel obstruction, there may be a problem at the anus or rectal region.

I would advise you the following:
Stool tests
Get a clinical evaluation, examination, per-rectal digital examination and ano-proctoscopy to start with done by a General Surgeon to be sure what exactly is the problem.
Further tests of colonoscopy, ultrasound/CT scan of the abdomen may be needed.

Please continue taking Dulcolax or try any other laxative which works as well as suits your requirement.
Watch for the diet or beverages which instigate or enhance the problems and stop consuming these.

I hope this answer helps you to get an early diagnosis and proper treatment, please feel free to give feedback, ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Thanks for your feedback, very specific.
In laxatives:
the rule is try different ones in different dosages and continue on the one that suits you well as well as works well.
I would suggest you to try different ones, one by one, the dosages as will be written on the bottle or packages or on leaflet supplied or can consult your Doctor for the prescription (if needed and for dosages)
- Cremaffin plain / Cermaffin plus liquid taken at bedtime
- Isabgol = Psyllium or Ispaghula husk available in powder form and to be taken with warm water at bedtime
- Green leafy vegetables , ladies fingers (bhindi) and any other foods that you must have noted to help proper evaluation.
Avoid all the foods and beverages that you must have noticed by this time to cause constipation and to be avoided or stopped altogether.
