Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Non-allergic Rhinitis

Question: I am having a very high sensitivity to slight change in weather. If I walk from one room to another and say for instance there is a 10 degree change my head get really heavy, my nose becomes congested and knees seems to be weak or want to buckle from under me. I went to my ENT he said he doesn't know what is wrong. I had a turbinate reduction and deviated septum surgery on 03/04/15. He looked at my sinuses and stated that they are clear. I went to the allergy doctor they said my allergy levels are not high. This is so frustrating. I am off balance all the time and feel like my head is too big for my body. Please help.

Brief Answer:
More information needed about your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

First there are some things that need to be clarified such your basic medical info (age, drugs used if any, past medical history, known allergies).

Clarifications needed about your symptoms too, from how long did you feel them?, how long do they last? what if any things improve or worsen your symptoms? any imaging studies reports? your blood pressure levels? symptoms worsen or improve in cold/heat?

I remain at your disposal for further clarifications. Best regards.

Hi Dr. Spaho:

I am 41 years old. I take singulair and lasonprozle that the doctor gave me to try to see if it will help. I have no known past medical problem. I used to have difficulty breathing but it was determined that it was due to my block sinuses due to swollen turbinates in my nose that I did the surgery to shrink them. I went to the allergist and did the blood test and prick test and was told everything was fine and there is nothing they can do for me.

My symptoms could last anywhere to 20 mins but reoccurred as soon as the room changes temperature or if I go outside from one temperature to another. I use nasal rinses, but this doesn't help. Some of the time when I go outside my sinuses get filled up and my ear also get fill out with pressure to the point where it feels like its going to pop. Then most of the time I just lose my balance so I have to stop to make sure I don't fall and hit my head. Sometimes my nose hurt so bad that the pressure starts to affect my teeth. I know it has something to do with my nose because this is where the issue always start. I did a sinus scan and I was told that my sinuses are clear. I was wondering if my adenoid sinus has anything to do with it. The pressure normally builds up towards the root of my nose. Room temperature alone stabilizes it, which is rear to find here in CT. Heat bothers is a lot more than cold, but cold does also. My blood pressure is always 117/78. I know cigarette scent sometimes irritate my nose and strong cologne.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Probably nonallergic rhinitis.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back XXXXXXX and thanks for the clarifications.

I think you're right, this is related to nose problems.

In my opinion, yours is the case of nonallergic rhinitis, a condition when nasal vessels expand filling and thickening the nasal lining with blood and fluid.

This condition is known to be caused and triggered by several factors including weather and temperature changes.

Ear pressure and imbalance are caused by middle ear disfunction due to narrowing of Eustachian tube by nasal swelling.

This condition may lead to nasal polips formation and chronic sinusitis.

Singulair is a treatment used to prevent allergic reactions especially related to asthma, so , I think is not appropriate to use in your case.

Instead, I think you need to try local nasal corticoids ( Nasonex spray eg.).

Other treatment possibilities include Antihystaminics ( spray), decongestant nasal spray, oral decongestants.

I suggest you to discuss with your treating Doctor above mentioned possibility as a cause of your symptoms and further treatment.

Hope I helped you. Wishing you good health.
