Posted on Thu, 1 Dec 2016
Question: It's been about an year and a half from my last schizophrenia symptoms. However, I find my character constantly changing and is different from how I was before schizophrenia.(ex. change from narcissistic style to a paranoid style to a avoidant type to no personality at all). others doesn't seem to catch my personality change, but now I am so annoyed by this constant change and is obsessed with checking my personality type and I always want to control and manipulate my personality. Is this obsession some other type of schizophrenia symptom, or am I having some kind of DID?

Brief Answer:
It is not indicative of DID

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns.

First of all I must inform you that schizophrenia is a complex disorder and there is heterogeneous presentation over the course of time. I mean to say that symptoms of schizophrenia are never same on two occasions and it is possible that you are still having symptoms in form of checking personality as obsession. I routinely observe that people with schizophrenia present differently and two episodes are never same in majority except the behavioral change which are quite same across the episodes.

I also inform you that around 60% of people with schizophrenia have either Obsessive symptoms or obsessive compulsive disorder leading to repeated behavior such as checking, avoiding, hoarding, washing among others.

In dissociative identity disorder the two identities are not aware of each other but in your case every identity is aware of each other thus making little possibility of DID.

I hope this helps you.
If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
If not, you may close the discussion and if possible you may rate the answer for my future patients.

If I don't have DID, how can my feelings of personality change explained? Is everything merely a fake feeling that have been supplied by schizophrenia-based imagination?
Also, will practicing mindfulness meditation worsen or improve my symptoms?

Brief Answer:
Mindfullness meditation improves these symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reverting back to me.

The feelings of change in personality can be explained on the following grounds. First as you said the schizophrenia based imagination for self and surrounding could lead to feeling of change in personality. Second as I communicated above the presentation of schizophrenia never same and you are having different symptoms due to schizophrenia itself. The third possibility is stress associated with diagnosis of schizophrenia. Although it is difficult to explain how stress can lead to all these symptoms but I have observed similar presentation in few of my patients and I am of the opinion that this should be considered while making explanation.

Mindfulness medication is excellent form of psychotherapy which derives great results in residual or immediate other symptoms of schizophrenia. The feeling of change in personality is one among them and it is possible that you will get benefitted with the use of mindfulness meditation.

I hope this assists you further.
Thanks and regards.
