Brief Answer:
I guess you're looking for something GOOD?

Detailed Answer:
Good morning. My name is Dr. Dariush Saghafi and I'm a neurologist from XXXXXXX OH.
I see a lot of tardive dyskinesia in my practice, at the hospital, and when you say you're looking for natural substances to treat TD, my assumption is that you're looking for something GOOD (meaning, it works to either suppress or reverse effects), itself doesn't cause side effects, and of course, doesn't cost the price of a small house! Well, guess what....the drug companies are looking for that same GOOD drug!

The problem with TD is that in some people it can be permanent and that can happen after just 1 or 2 doses. The other problem with treating TD is that there is yet to be a clear and concise consensus as to exactly what is happening making getting after a focused and specific treatment that consistently works for everyone is very difficult.

The BEST treatment, bar none is to STOP whatever medication or group of medications which started the problem in the first place.

Otherwise, look at this article if you haven't already from NYU:

http://www.med.nyu.edu/content?ChunkIID=21835

I like this article not so much because they give you PROVEN treatments....as I was trying to say above there really are none to date- but rather I think it gives a balanced presentation of substances which other people tout as curative...which of course, they are not.

The thrust behind all the natural remedies for TD centers are anti-oxidants but again, I can't see giving you advice to go out and just spend a lot of money at the GNC store thinking you're going to come out with something really awesome when in fact, it will turn out to be a huge let down.

Nevertheless, Vit. E, DMAE, Vit. B6, and branched amino acids are the ones I would give most credibility to as having any chance of giving patients relief of symptoms.

I WOULD NOT USE GINGKO BILOBA which is suggested in this article. I strongly disagree with that suggestion. GB has been associated with convulsive disorder and very little benefit in comparison to the risk. Therefore, I think GB should be tossed out of the mix.

Also be aware that there are those who believe that some types of diets (such as those that contain high concentrations of PHENYLALANINE- an amino acid) actually perpetuate or exacerbate TD symptoms and complications.

I hope some of this information has been helpful and if so would greatly appreciate your written feedback and a STAR RATING if you'd be so kind. Also, do know that you can always reach me with questions directly to my attention at:
