Detailed Answer:
Hi Madam,
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Both thread worm and tapeworm infections come under parasitic group of infestations.
Treatment or thread worm:
It involves combination of treatment with drugs and maintaining hygiene measures.
1. Mebendazole is the main drug used in treating thread worm infections.Albendazole can be used if mebendazole is not available.
This drug is available in both syrup and tablet form.
2. Mebendazole: A dose of 400 mg once a day at bedtime unrelated to meals for 3 days is usually enough. A similar dosing pattern can be offered for another 3 days after one week.
3.This should be coupled with maintenance of strict hygiene measures.
4. To successfully treat thread worms, all the house hold members have to be treated ,even if they have no symptoms.
5. Mebendazole is effective in killing 90-100% of adult worms. It is not effective for larval forms.
Hence strict hygiene has to be followed for another 6 weeks (as the life span of thread worm is 6 weeks) to halt larval forms.
Hygiene measures to be followed:
1. Wash all night clothes, bed linen, towels and soft toys when first diagnosed.
2. Rooms should be vacuum cleaned.
3. Carefully wash rooms by damping dusting surfaces.
4. Do not eat food in the bed room.
5. Keep your finger nails short.
6. Discourage nail biting and sucking.
7. Wash your hands frequently and scrub your nails.
8. Wear close fitting underwear at night and change under wear every morning.
9. Bath regularly.
10. Every one in the household maintain their own towel and flannel.
11. Keep toothbrushes in closed cupboard and rinse them thoroughly before use.
Side effects of Mebendazole:
These drugs generally has no side effects.its relatively has no side effects.in rare cases it can cause diarrhoea, particularly if the infection is severe.
Treatment for tapeworms:
Following drugs are used for treatment of tapeworms.
1.Praziquantal
2.Niclosamide
3.Albendazole.
In case of severe infections additional drugs like Dexamethasone and anti epileptics are used.
The treatment can be for 1-3 weeks depending on the severity of infection and location of parasites in the body.
These drugs are also relatively free of side effects.Occasionally they can cause nausea, vomiting and pain abdomen.
Preventive measures include avoiding consuming infected pork and meat.
