Suggest Treatment For Tiredness, Brain Fog, Constipation And Headaches While On Calcitriol
Question: Dr. Ditah,
Four weeks ago I wrote about my 92 yo mother that I was rehabbing for a fractured femur. She was crashing from low BP. We ended up taking her off all BP medications to get her BP to rise. She has been off meds for three weeks with BP averaging 125/65. She quickly transferred from a walker to a cane and is now walking around the house with no support. Strength ,balance, mind are greatly improved! Next question I have is her medication of Calcitriol .25 mcg 3/wk. Now her diet has changed so much with bone broth, real vegetables and milk from our farm, She has many symptoms of too much calcitriol. Tired, unclear thinking, constipation and headaches. We take the medication away and symptoms go away..... your thoughts??

Brief Answer:
We treat the patient and not laboratory tests!
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am so pleased to learn your mother is doing a lot better. The mistake we physicians often make is to focus on the laboratory results than the patients state/symptoms. What matters most to me is how your mom feels. As long as your mother feels better with any measure, that is what is right for her.
I am not a fan of many medications. You are actually on the right path and I encourage you to continue. Put an eye on her and focus on how she feels as opposed to what and how many medications she's on.
I hope this further reassures. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.
