Question: my husband is 84 years old has had, what the doctor says are night terrors for the past 4 years, 4 or 5 each year.
Last night he had 3 in one night. To me they look like seizures. They start with a dreadful anguished scream and then clenched fists and shaking. He stays unconscious and after calming him I let him sleep as he makes no sense if I wake him up. He always urinates during these incidents. His legs often ache the next day so they must also tense up. I think he gets over heated and I suggested he not turn on his electric blanket any more. He is usually very warm and clammy when this happens. Not certain what else to do.
Brief Answer:
I agree these episodes sound like seizures.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.
I have noted your husband's symptoms and I agree with you that they suggest a diagnosis of seizures.
To be more precise, they are like generalised tonic-clonic seizures.
For further evaluation, he should undergo a CT scan of brain and electroencephalography (EEG).
He should also be started on empirical anti-epileptic drugs to prevent the recurrence of seizures.
I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.
Wishing you good health,
