Suggest Treatment For Tonsilitis
Question: Hello,
I went to the doctors yesterday to find out I have very bad tonsillitis. They gave me penicillin and said to take 2 tablets 4 times a day. I took one dosage of 2 tablets last night at around 6:30. I woke up this morning and my uvula (the dangly thing in the back of my throat) is very very swollen to about 3 times it's normal size and making it very difficult to swollow. Is this normal? Should I carry on taking the penicillin? Have you got any other advice to help it go down?
Many thanks

Detail Follows.
Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Welcome to HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney. I understand your concern.
This seems to be Severe Acute Bacterial Tonsillo-pharyngitis.
I advise following in such condition:
1. To take a better antibiotic of Penicillin group like Augmentin.
2. To do warm saline gargles.
3. To take an anti inflammatory pain killer like Diclofenac once or twice a day.
4. I also suggest to get Streptococcal Throat Swab test done.
5. To gargles with Chlorohexidine or Betadine solution three times a day.
You can discuss my opinion with your doctor, i am sure, he/she would agree to this.
If you have any further query, please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
