Suggest Treatment For Tooth Ache

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I have a rather painful tooth ache. I do not have any noticeable swelling in my jaw or cheek.. I am taking two Extra Strength Tylanol tabs (500 mg each) about every five hours. I do not drink alcohol, so I am wondering if I can temporarily increase the Tylanol dosage. I would also appreciate any suggestions with regard to other over the counter drugs or home remedies that may provide some additional relief.

Brief Answer:
Add Ibuprofen to Tylenol!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this toothache that you have reported. The best thing to do is to see a dentist for evaluation and management.Because this is not possible right away, pain medications should be administered to help with this.

In addition to tylenol(do not take more than 8pills of 500mg in a day/24hours), I will recommend that you add Ibuprofen to it. This drug can provoke gastritis symptoms. ask your local pharmacist if it is safe for you to take it. Ibuprofen is recommended at doses of 400mg at most three times in a day. A combination of these two medications would be more effective and you would not need to overdose on Tylenol. I will also like that you check with your local drug store to see if they have anesthetics for toothache. If they do, soak cotton in it and place over the painful tooth and hold before discarding after about an hour.

These measures would only control pain and would not treat the underlying condition. Please, book an appointment to get this checked out by a dentist for a permanent solution as soon as possible.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

I should have mentioned that I am on Coumadin (INR ~2.5) So generally I avoid taking NSAIDs. However, if adding Avil or another Ibruprofen to the Tylanol would help me sleep tonight, I don't think it would not be a problem as I have no intestinal problems. I plan to see my dentist on Monday morning, so would probably not take the NSAID the night before.

Brief Answer:
For short term, it is okay!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for this follow up precision.

For a short duration like 2days, it would not affect the INR and the coumadin treatment. You can conveniently take this to relief the pains till you see the dentist on Monday.

Let me know how well the pains get controlled with this addition. I wish you well.
