Suggest Treatment For Tricompartmental Osteoarthritis
Knee replacement is for 4th stage or severe osteoarthritis.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Knee replacement is for fourth stage osteoarthritis where the joint space is reduced so much. Friction is so much and synovial fluid is also decreased so much in this stage . Joint movements will be very painful and you can feel the friction while attempting movement. Pain medications won't help much in this. Knee replacement in that case will help in proper movement of knee.
But if you are in third stage , where cartilage is still left and joint space is not much narrowed, you can benefit from conservative treatment.
Physical therapy, weight loss , use of NSAIDs, and viscosupplents like glucosamine is very helpful in this stage.
Viscosupplement - hyaluronic acid for intraarticular injections are helpful in this stage. Usually it is 3 to 5 injections over a period of 3 to 5 weeks time. It will take some time to get effect but the relief will last for 6 months or more.
Quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises are also helpful as it decreases the load into knee joint.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
