Question: I have a patient with documented type I hsv in the pubic region She took suppressive therapy with Valtrex for 5 years and has now tested antibody negative for 3 straight years Has the virus been eradicated? Is she able to stop the Valtrex ?

Hello,

regardless of any test, herpes is not curable. Valtrex and other antivirals may reduce the flares but eradication is not possible. By stopping valtrex she'll increase the risk of new flares and asymptomatic shedding.
