Suggest Treatment For Umbilical Hernia

Posted on Sat, 25 Mar 2017
Question: Hi, I think I have developed an umbilical hernia. I am 68 and over-weight (290 lbs. 5' 9.5"). It is painful to touch and has only been present or noticeable for a few days. Today is Saturday and I expect I will have to wait until Monday before I can contact my doctor for an appointment. I know that an examination by my primary will be necessary before I will be referred to some other doctor and further delay will be involved as I will have to schedule another appointment with that doctor. How urgent is? Should I go to an E.R.?

Brief Answer:
Yes, please go to ER asap.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
To recapitulate: Male/68 - BMI 42+ - thinks that have developed umbilical hernia - noticeable for a few days - tender - today is Sat - noted the practical problem you have put-in - noted medications ....
Yes, with the history you have given, it is better to go to ER as you will have clinical evaluation, actual examination, Ultrasonography/CT scan to confirm the presence of umbilical hernia and since it is painful to touch, it is necessary to diagnosed whether obstructed or so.
This is very important to know at the earliest.
Please give feedback about the findings.

I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Went to E.R. and obtained CT which confirmed suspicions. The hernia was pushed back into the stomach wall but it reoccurred the same evening by the time I got back from the 7 hour ordeal in the E.R. Surgeon will evaluate on Wed 3-1-17 who will possibly do a repair which was delayed due to the presence of inflamation and to avoid risk of infection spreading. I can scan and upload the CT scan report.
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Please post reports.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
Since the hernia could be pushed back, you can keep the hernia reduced.
Take rest.
Please that you do not do anything that increase intra-abdominal pressure.
I hope, you do not have coughing or constipation.
Keep posted the progress and post reports.
