Question: My sister has been in the hospital for a week & 2 days. Inserted catheter when admitted & removed 2 days later then determined she had a UTI put catheter b ack in for another 3 or 4 days. Removed it she was ok but a day later could not urinate on her own, Inserted again removed could not urinate again insert again been at least 3 days. They are not removing it & want to send her home with it. Why does this happen & they are not explaining. Said to see a Urologist. I believe she should already seen one in the hospital. Do you have an explanation what might be going on. Also, They had her on antibiotics for UTI.

Brief Answer:
Urinary retention can be because of lot of reasons in an elderly female XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Urinary retention can be because of lot of reasons in an elderly female patient. May be her longstanding back problems with lot of immobility can be contributory.

Investigations like urodynamic studies, ultrasound of abdomen/pelvis would given an idea what is going on and about the cause. Complicated UTI can also sometimes cause this. Diagnosis can be confirmed only by going through all the hospitalization records.

Hope it helps!
