Suggest Treatment For Urine Retention And Leakage Due To Prostate Cancer

Question: Hi, I live in Northern Arizona. For the size of the retirement population, there are few Urologists in our region. I went to my primary doctor on March of this year, when I noticed I was urinating quite frequently and had little control over it. I had a blood test and it showed that I did not have any urinary track infection and that my urine was clear. My doctor gave me some anti-bionics and prescribed some Tamsulosin help me urinate. He also referred me to a Urologist near by and was able to get me an appointment for the next day. I had to drive almost twenty miles to his office, to find that he was not there, so I rescheduled to the only other Urologist in town which is about sixty miles from my home. I was not able to get an appointment for about a month. I finally was able to see him on May 34th. Since, I was new, he scheduled me for a cat scan at the local hospital . I found out that my Cancer Doctor had also scheduled me for a Cat Scan and a Bone Scan at the local hospital sometime in XXXXXXX , so I canceled the first one and called my Cancer Doctor and asked for an earlier date. They scheduled me for the sixth of May . I did go through with those procedures. At that time I was in a lot of pain and had to have a catheter inserted to relieve my bladder. I was almost immediately relieved.
On May fifteen I went back to the second Urologist and he preformed a Cystoscopy which was to evidently open up the passageway in the uritha so that I could urinate. Well at that point they removed the catheter and sent me home. The next day I was in severe pain due to not being able to urinate not even a drop. He had me scheduled for the 5th of XXXXXXX but in the paperwork that he gave me , it instructed me to call the doctor if I had any trouble urinating. That night it was so bad I could not sleep , and his office did not open until eight in the morning. I had my wife drive me over to his office , and we arrived there about the time it opened. I was in severe pain, and I had to wait in the office for about a half hour before they could see me. When they finally saw me, the nurse installed another catheter. That is where I am at today.
My question is ?? Is this fixable? Is there another procedure to fix the problem? Do I have to wear a catheter and bag for the rest of my life? I am a little depressed over this, as I feel a little uncomfortable and fatigued and am looking for answers that don't seem to be forthcoming. Any insight you can provide me as to the next step of any I can take would be very helpful. Thanking you in advance for taking the time out to evaluate my problem.
Sincerely, XXXXX

Brief Answer:
I think you can be made free of catheter.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mr XXXXXXX

Welcome to the forum.
Sorry to hear about you.
I went through your clearly narrated history.

With the back ground of cancer prostate, i need to know the reports of

1. Latest serum PSA.
2. Reports of bone scan, CAT scan and cystoscopy.

The symptoms you had for the first time was most probably retention of urine due to enlarged prostate gland because of cancer and the urine leak is called overflow leak.
Now that you have a catheter means that the path is almost blocked by the enlarged cancer prostate.

So , the logical next step would be to relieve the block by removing the obstructing prostate gland by a cystoscopic procedure called CHANNEL TURP.

However, We need to know the findings of the FIRST CYSTOSCOPY as it will throw light on the size of the obstructing gland and other findings if any..

If the disease is not too advanced, i would think that the procedure i have mentioned above should relieve the block and you should be free of catheter.

Meanwhile, I would like to know the results of the tests mentioned above to guide you further.

Kindly write back with the reports and further doubt clarification if any,

Wish you good health,
Sincerely,
