Suggest Treatment For Urine Retention In Bladder

default
Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: Dear Doctor,

I don't seem to be able to empty my bladder completely and I need to "push" and then I can urinate some more.
At times -- after urinating-- I have (after a short period of time) the necessity to empty my bladder again and then I urinate some more.
I am 81 years old, so maybe this is part of aging, but hopefully there is not some occlusion in the bladder that prevents it to empty completely.
Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer:
urinary incontinence or stricture in the urethra

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

It seems that there is some urinary retention based on the description you have given.

As you think it may be due to occlusion or it may be also due to a problem called urinary incontinence or stricture in the urethra or kidney stones.

Urinary incontinence at this stage is not an uncommon finding and you need to get investigated regarding the same.

Stricture or kidney stones also need to be excluded. So i suggest you to undergo the an ultrasound of abdomen/pelvis ,uroflometry/urodynamic studies in addition to urological physical examination.
This would diagnose the problem and further appropriate management can be planned . Anyhow if urinary retention is more and more amount of urine is staying in the bladder, you may also need urinary catheterization, if not it may lead to complications.

Thanks.
