Suggest Treatment For Viral Cough With Phlegm
Question: (resending due to couple of mistakes in earlier post) Hi I am XXXXX aged 33 years Male. Last week mywife had throat infection and I seemed to have picked it from her since Saturday evening. I feel pain when I gulp or swallow anything. That same night I have started feeling body pains. I took a paracetomol and that improved my situation and I could sleep. Referring my previous first aid instructions from my family doctor, I have started a course of Azhithromycin 500 mg (once a day) along with paracetomol. So far I have taken 2 tabs of Azhithromycin. My throat is much better now. However since yesterday evening I am coughing mildly ; say once every 20 min. So instead of normal paracetomol I have taken coughrite in the night and this morning. There is flum when I cough. Do you have any suggestions on my medication.
Brief Answer:
Self medication is hazardous.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I reviewed your symptoms. This cough may be a post viral cough or due to infection descending into your chest. Since you haven't consulted a doctor, it is not right to advice further management. I generally use doxycycline if infection is descending into the chest. But if it is post viral cough, it can be managed with cough suppressant drugs.
Therefore at this point of time, it is important to identify the cause. Do not self medicate without establishing the cause.
Instead of using self medicated drugs, I recommend that you start steam inhalation 3-4 times a day and can take syrup benadryl 2 teaspoon twice a day for the cough. Visit a doctor...
take care!
