Suggest Treatment For Viral Gastroenteritis
Question: Hello, my husband is 33 year old male. He is fit and healthy except for regular migraines. He mainly works alone from home. Has been feeling unwell for the last 36 - 42 hours. Began projectile vomiting twice last night (16 hours ago) and again today (3 hours ago). Have tried him on frozen electrolytes (from chemist/drug store, made for gastro) and sports drink but is not keeping fluids or food down. Temperature last night was 36.9 and today was 35.9. I am pregnant and have no symptoms. He efuses to go to doctor - what should I look out for ?.

I am so sorry to hear about this illness that your husband has. This sounds very much like a viral gastroenteritis. This will certainly subside spontaneously. However, he needs to be able to drink fluids/electrolytes to replace the losses. If this is impossible and he has frequent episodes of diarrhea, I will suggest that he goes and get fluids to be replenished parenterally. He can also take metoclopramide to cut vomiting while he drinks enough fluids for rehydration. Watch out for sunken eyes, decreased urine output, increased thirst, dry mouth and lips, cold extremities, rapid pulse and dropping blood pressure. These are warning signals for decreased urine output!
