Suggest Treatment For Viral Laryngitis

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Feb 2015
Question: I have viral laryngitis as a result of a bed good old fashioned head cold. Lungs clear, no fever and getting better but when I know when I go to bed tonight the coughing will start. The coughing produces thick green mucus (but fortunately each night there is less mucus fortunately). I hardly cough at all during the day and I am drinking TONS of water and lemon and hone and I am not a smoker. If I take Delsym cough and cold tonight, might that make my laryngitis worse? My voice is just starting to come back and I can't risk my voice getting worse again. I haven't taken anything thus far. The doctor prescribed Methylprednisolone but I have not and will not take it after reading all the side effects. I really couldn't "talk" to him about anything and he spent very little time with me so I just accepted the prescription. However, I prefer to try and manage this on my own after reading about that.

Brief Answer:
You can take Delsym cough and cold night preparation for adults at bedtime

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in details.
Taking Methylprednisolone is not mandatory. It is a steroid medication and might have certain side effects when taken orally, that you are already aware of.

Taking Delsym cough and cold might get you relief and a sound sleep. Delsym cough and cold for adults is available in day time and night time preparations. The day time syrup contains acetaminophen as an additional component. If you do not have fever then you can take the Delsym cough and coldfor night preparation and take it as recommended for adults. This should not cause any worsening of symptoms unless you are developing a secondary bacterial throat infection. After taking the medication you might feel drowsiness and this is best taken at bed time. Avoid doing any high alert activities like driving or cooking after taking the medication.

Since you have consulted your doctors and confirmed your condition as viral laryngitis, you can do warm water gargling twice a day to keep your throat clear and avoid exposure to cold or dry weather and dust pollution.

With sufficient care you should be well in 3 to 5 days time. However if the symptoms continue after 5 days or worsen then please do not hesitate to take prescription antibiotics in case you develop a secondary bacterial throat infection.

Wishing you a quick recovery.

Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Regards,
