Suggest Treatment For Vomiting, Diarrhea And Stomach Pain In A Child

Question: My grandson who is 5 years old has been vomiting and has diarreah with stomach discomfort and gas. This has been going on for 5 days now and he saw a doctor today who did blood work, ex-ray of his stomach and was sent home to catch a stool specimen to be taken back to doctor's office. Just wondering what could be wrong and what we should be doing in the meantime. He is also somewhat lethargic and his eyes look glazed. Please any information would be much appreciated.
Brief Answer:
Vomiting/Diarrhea
Detailed Answer:
Hello. I just read through your question.
The symptoms you describe are consistent with a stomach infection. The majority of these cases are viral and ultimately resolve on their own. In this case, the most important thing to do is make sure he stays well hydrated by taking clear fluids by mouth.
In a smaller number of cases, the cause is bacterial. In this case, antibiotics are required to cure the illness.
The stool culture will help determine if this is viral or bacterial. Once the doctor has the result, they will know the proper course of treatment.

If it is a viral infection how much longer will these symptoms be present. He began vomiting Friday so it has been 5 days and he is not any better. Is this the normal time range for a viral stomach infection? I was always told if it is a virus infection that it only last 1-3 days? Thanks so much for your reply. I am just a very worried grandmother.
Brief Answer:
Follow up
Detailed Answer:
I understand your concern.
In general, viruses last 7-10 days. In the case of stomach viruses, it can be anything from 1-10 days. So the range is very wide, and there is no way to predict how long until it ends.
