Suggest Treatment For Weakness And Tenderness In Muscles Through Out The Body

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Weak, tender, ticklish feeling in muscles throughout body, especially arms, legs, hands, feet, sometimes stomach and chest, accompanied by numb cheeks. I've had this occasionally for a few years, now it's almost every day. For years I've had numb cheeks with anxiety. Last night I had a spasm-like sensation on my scalp, above the left temple near the top of my head...like a little propeller going around in my hair, lasted an hour or so. A Vanderbilt neurologist thought the problem with muscles may be degenertive bone or disc disease. but an MRI showed only arthritis in the back (my primary care doc thought possibly a pinched nerve related to arthritis). I'm basically healthy for my age (75), elliptical machine daily, other exercises, very healthy diet, great cholesterol. No answers, looking for another take on this very annoying malady.

Brief Answer:
Possibility of Peripheral neuropathy should be evaluated further.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

First, I need to see the MRI report in order to have a better understanding of your condition.

One possible condition that may cause your symptoms is peripheral neuropathy, or damage to peripheral nerves by different factors.

Since there's no diabetes, other conditions that may cause peripheral neuropathy include low vitamin B12 levels, alcohol use, side effects of certain drugs, heavy metals poisoning etc.

As a first step I recommend you to have nerve conduction studies of your extremities done ( EMG), and vitamin B12 levels measured.

Further steps in diagnosis depend on nerve conduction study results.

Anxiety disorder could also cause those symptoms, but neurologic causes should be excluded/evaluated first.

In conclusion, if arthritis is not responsible for your symptoms, peripheral neuropathy should be assessed as a possible cause.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Take care.
