Suggest Treatment For Weight Gain, Fatigue And Excessive Feeling Of Coldness

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: Hello. I have always had a TSH of about 2.6-2.9 and just last week I got a result with a TSH of 0.28. This is very unusual for me as I usually struggle a lot with weight gain, fatigue, cold extremities etc. I am just wanting some advice on this as I didn't realise your TSH can go from being toward the higher end to being so low? The reference range for this test was .5 - 4 so .28 is asterixed as 'clinically low'. Would you suggest seeing my GP sooner rather than later? Would you usually medicate for a TSH of .28? My Free T3 was 5.6 and my Free T4 was 13.4. Thank you :-)

Brief Answer:
Could be thyroiditis- needs follow up

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HCM. I have gone through the question and understand your concerns.

If the report is not due to lab error, one common condition which can cause slightly low TSH is thyroiditis. Just like tonsillitis, your thyroid gets an inflammation. ( other causes like central hypothyroidism and medications causing low TSH are rare situations)

No treatment is needed if T3 and T4 are normal. Follow up thyroid function test is usually done after 2-3 months to see if TSH is normalised. Your doctor may do a anti TPO antibody if he is suspecting an auto immune cause for thyroiditis.

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any further queries I will be happy to help you
