Suggest Treatment For Wrinkly Skin Due To Cream From Skin Reduction Kit

Question: I purchased a skin reduction kit from Skin Biology two years ago. Along with the kit came a book which purported copper peptides benefits as a cosmetic treatment for the skin. I used the product for 3 days one week and 3 days the next. It made my skin appear like crepe paper and wrinkly when smiling. The acute condition (crepe paper like skin) resolved but I am left with permanent dynamic wrinkles and appear to have aged much in the last two years. I have researched and see copper peptides in studies has been show to increase mmp activity in wounds by removing damaged collagen to assist in healing. My question is could it increase mmp activity and damage intact skin collagen? If so would this damage be permanent? or does collagen replace itself naturally through cellular process? Thanks for your attention to this matter.

Brief Answer:
Skin ageing

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query and I have understood it.

Though, Copper is essential to wound healing, it has skin aging potential. Both wound healing and skin aging are facilitated by matrixmetalloproteinases (MMP) which require copper for activity.

While moderate use of copper peptides stimulates collagen synthesis and is claimed to have antioxidant effect (by stimulating the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase). However, excessive use or in those with unusual sensitivity, it can have an opposite effect by increasing the levels of free copper and/or by triggering excessive production of metalloproteinases(MMP). Free copper promotes free radical damage and collagen breakdown leading to accelerated skin aging. Metalloproteinases in turn can digest collagen and elastin, weakening the skin and causing wrinkles and sag.

The collagen dose replace itself naturally and theoretically the damage should be reversible, gradually, partially at least if not totally, but that would be hard to judge because the effect is slow and is also partially countered by natural chronological ageing.

Nevertheless, If I was the treating doctor I would suggest that you may use topical tretinoin which is US FA approved as an antiageing molecule and is claimed to reduce the appearance and even reverse lines and wrinkles. It remodels dermal collagen and also helps in collagen regeneration.

Regarding static wrinkles, I must say that, dermal fillers are the only option. Even Botulinum toxin won't work for static wrinkles. Tretinoin too won't work on these.
Discuss all about this your treating doctor.

Ageing is a combination of chronological ageing+ photoageing. Photoageing is more of an issue in fairer skin/caucasians. Therefore I would also suggest you to also use a broad spectrum sunscreen throughout the day to prevent further sun induced ageing (Photoageing)
