Question: Hi, My father(73 yrs) had a major stroke(infract with hemorragic transformations) on March 17th 2014.
He has recovered physically and is able to walk, recognize ,eat etc. But, he cannot speak. Seems like Aphasia.
He can mention some words occasionally. What can be done? Is there a cure? What is the best hospital to consult at Kolkata?

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX

Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

I can understand your anxiety about your dad's health.

Your father has suffered from a major stroke. This has involved the speech centre of the brain called as the brocas area. Hence he is unable to talk.

I would recommend the following for him:

Rigorous speech therapy

Anti platelet drugs in the noon

Statin at neight

Cerebral activator drugs

Rules of the website prevent me from prescribing a particular drug. They also prevent me from referring you to a particular hospital.

Prognosis:

Recovery time for speech in a stroke is usually 6 months. The recovery can be partial or complete depending on the affected area and how good a speech therapy was done. However there is no magical cure available because neurons once dead do not regenerate. The adjoining cells try to take over their function.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
