Suggest Treatment Torn Medial Meniscus

Question: After a golf swing, my right knee was in severe pain and slightly swollen. I elevated and iced it for 1.5 days. Pain free, swelling gone. I saw my doctor and he ordered an MRI that shows a tear in the middle of my medial meniscus. I am in no pain but other than walking my dog, I have not done any exercise in 10 days. It is not swollen, it doesn't click, etc. I see a surgeon on Tuesday but my ortho doctor thinks I will need surgery. I am an active person. I broke my right ankle exactly last year playing tennis. My question is, is surgery the best option if I want to continue being active? I am a female who is 46 and in very good shape. I ran a half marathon a few months ago. Also, could these two injuries be related to an underlying issue or just isolated incidents? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Surgery is best option.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The torn medial meniscus needs a surgical repair if the tear involves more than half of the thickness of the meniscus and there is an instability of the joint. Since you are symptomatically well the surgery will help you to maintain an active lifestyle.
Otherwise a conservative treatment with rest and brace is needed for healing for 4-6 weeks. If you want to be active then a surgical arthroscopic repair is the best option for you.
The two injuries that you mentioned are likely to be two isolated events with no other systemic pathology involved.
I hope this answers your query.
