Suggest Ways To Manage Allergy Due To Nitrofurantoin
Question: I'm allergic to sulfa drugs and was given Nitrofurantoin for a UTI. On day 7, I started having symptoms of an allergic reaction (swelling of tongue). Is this medicine sulfa based?
Brief Answer:
no it is not sulfa based
Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
NO it is not a sulfa antibiotic.
Though most allergic reactions typically start by day 3 to 4, this can vary and it would be best to let your doctor know about your reaction so that he or she can alter the medication for you.
It can be changed to another antibiotic that you may be able to tolerate better.
Other non sulfa antibiotic family of medications are penicilins (Eg amoxil or augmentin), quinolones (eg ciprofloxacin), trimethoprim, cephalosporins (eg duricef)
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
