default
Posted on Mon, 2 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, my name is XXXXXXX I had Cushings when I was young, in fact I was used to discover the cure. At 28 I started menopause and at 68 I am still in it. I had a hysterectomy at 33. I have been using a homone ring for years, but the price has increased to $300.00, and that is just too expensive. Is there an alternative?

Brief Answer:
you can have systemic estrogen

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Thankyou for your question.

I can understand your concern.I would suggest you to try systemic estrogen. As post hystrectomy you will not have to take progesterone and estrogen both for hormones replacement therapy.
You may need only estrogen replacement therapy , which you may take in form of pills, skin patch, spray or gel with reasonable prices.

As taking systemic estrogen as compare to ring can prevent not only from vaginal itching, dryness or discomfort during intercourse,it can also prevent from postmenopausal hot flushes and irritation and bone thinning (osteoporosis).

I hope ,I answered your question well and helpful.

Do ask further without any hesitation.

I have used the patches, pills, but never a spray or gel. I am using estrogen replacement with the ring. Without it I have hot flashes, night sweats and I am very irritable. When I started on hormone replacement, I was taking Premarin in the largest dose available. It was not managing my symptoms, so I went to the patch, which would not stay on. I then started with the ring. I was just in hopes that after 40 years there was an easier treatment and one that is less expensive. My Doctor told me the other day that she hopes I will just even out. Don't think that is going to happen after all this time. I guess I need to know if this is going to keep on until I die. I don't know anyone else that has had Cushings, so I can't talk to them about this. Thank you for your answer.

Brief Answer:
modify life style and trying some natural treatment too

Detailed Answer:
Since after menopause ,ovaries tend to be nonfunctional and that's why no ovulation occurs and no hormones surge for menses happens and hormone replacement therapy is required for long time.
As all women does not need hormones replacement therapy, but as you have been suffering from menopausal symptoms, and have been on hormone replacement therapy for long time.
In my opinion , you can get rid of menopausal symptoms by modifying life style and trying some natural treatment too.
There are some natural products too ,which can help decrease hot flushes and irritability and other menopausal symptoms, they are far less expensive and without side effects. some common natural products are...
1. Soy which contain phytoestrogen can be obtained from tofu, tempeh, soymilk and soy nuts. other can be some herbs like wild yam and black cohosh which can be got from any herbal shop.

Also making life style changes may help ease the discomfort of your symptoms, and keep you healthy in long run.

For example first of all eat healthy food, like more complex carbohydrates (brown bread, brown sugar, brown rice, sweet corns) ,at least half of your grains should be whole wheat, oatmeal and brown rice. Have plenty of fruits and vegetables. Also increasing fish (salmon fish would be more helpfull),nuts, egg whites and low fat yogurt and beans in diet may help you spend healthy life.Exercise daily at least brisk walk for 45 minutes daily, may increase your blood circulation and keep your heart and life healthy.

Hope my answer will be helpfull for you.
Wish you best of health.
