Question: Hello, I have been taking 1 mg of klonopin twice a day for 8 months. I was wondering what the proper way to taper off of that was. The way I'm doing it is as follows: 0.5 mg in the morning and 1 mg at night for one week, 0.5 mg in the morning and 0.5 mg at night for one week, and 0.5 mg in the morning for one week. Is this correct or will it lead to seizures?

Brief Answer:
It will not cause seizures

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

One milligram of klonopin use is unlikely to cause seizures on discontinuation. The seizures occur if there is heavy dose of klonopin and there is abrupt withdrawal.

The way you are doing is absolutely correct and if you find any problem I will recommend you to increase the time taking for each step is two weeks rather than one week.

The recommended reduction in each step is just 25 to 30 % and you are taking 33% reduction on every step which is absolutely within limits/near normal limits.

I hope this helps you.
Feel free to write back to me if you have more questions.
Thanks and regards.
