Question: I have been on Lansoprazole for 10 years. Now they have come out with a study that says it could lead to dementia. I want to go off it immediately. Can I stop cold turkey?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending your question.

Lansoprazole is a medication that you can stop without necessarily weaning. However, if you do stop this medication it does raise the risk that you could experience an increase in secretions of stomach acids which could cause you to have an upset stomach or possibly increase your risk for developing an ulcer.

I will discuss this in detail with your primary care physician before discontinuing this medication completely. your doctor might review the possibility of placing you on an alternative medication to help limit the risk of you developing ulcers in the future.

Your doctor might also prefer to observe while you're off the Lansoprazole for a period of time which is also a reasonable approach.

Thank you again for sending your question.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
