I can understand your concern. Xanax is Alprazolam and the drug is a benzodiazepine drug. The drug if stopped abruptly or cold turkey results in withdrawal effects. Gradual dose reduction is needed to wean off the drug.

You are taking 2.5 mg every other day and this doses should be reduced abruptly. Other treatment is to use medicines that help to reduce the craving and also help to ease the withdrawal. Medicines like Pregabalin or Gabapentin can be used. Either of these medicines if used properly will help to reduce the withdrawal and will also help to reduce the craving.
