Suggets Treatment For Cervical Spondylosis
Chronic pain doctor, neurosurgeon.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Cervical spondylosis is the medical term for age-related wear and tear of the bones and tissues of the neck. The symptoms include neck pain, neck stiffness and headaches. The may also be pins and needles in the arms and legs and loss of feeling in the arms and legs.
In many cases the symptoms can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, exercises and using the correct pillow at night. In the minority of cases surgery may be needed to remove any area of bone or tissue in the cervical spine which is causing problems. Codeine can also help some people especially those who cannot take non-steroidals. If muscle spasms develop in response to the pain then muscle relaxants such as diazepam may help. Also gabapentin and amitriptyline have a place in treatment. Steroid injections to the neck are offered in some cases. Surgery is only considered for those with serious nerve problems.
Therefore, the type of doctor who treats this condition will depend on how bad your symptoms are. In the first instance simple measures may help. Following this, a chronic pain doctor may help. If surgery is to be considered then either an orthopedic or a neurosurgeon who specialise in the neck should be consulted.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
