Question: I am having muscle spasms in my back and neck. My prescription for flexeril helped but I need a new one. Can you help me? I have tried hot showers, heat and ice but nothing helps.

Brief Answer: Seek a diagnosis. Reduce flexeril use. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for your query. I would not take long term flexeril for this problem but would seek other methods of treating your neck and back spasms such as exercise, stretching, massage. A physiotherapist may be able to help. You should also be asking what are the cause of these spasms. if you have any numbness or weakness on your arms or legs or you have noticed unsteadiness when you walk i.e. a change in your gait then you should have some further investigations such as X-rays and an MRI scan. You should also have some blood work as sometimes spasms can be caused by an electrolyte imbalance in your blood. Regards,

I do have numbness and tingling I my arms and hands it is very aggravating and has been that way for several months. What can cause this? I had a 30 day supply of flexeril two years ago and haven't had any since. These spasms are miserable though.

Brief Answer: A number of possible diagnosis Detailed Answer: Hi, Thanks for your query. Numbness and tingling in your arms and hands can be caused by compression of the nerves in your neck or in the arms themselves. It could also be caused by inflammation of the nerves ( a peripheral neuropathy or neuritis). You would need a full physical examination to help identify the problem by your doctor followed by blood work, an MRI scan of your neck and possibly nerve conduction studies. Depending on the diagnosis certain medications can help with the symptoms. Cortisone injections around nerves under Xray or CT guidance. Physiotherpy and massage. Surgical decompression can occasionally be necessary.
