Surgery Done For Deviated Septum. Noticed Boils On Buttocks. On Medication. What Is Causing This Boils?
Question: Re: Writing question about my 18 year old son. Had surgery for deviated septum Oct. 2009; shortly after had boils on buttocks..went to family Dr. said it was MRSA though did not test it. My son had large pus boils, painful to sit on. Was given antibotics, it returned..got more. Later, my son was incarcerated for Truancy. He missed alot of school because he could not sit in chair, and he was rebellious in many ways and I signed him up for program. He spent 3 months in jail in 2010 for not going to school and was treated there where the nurse drained his wounds. Had no control on his medical and not sure what they did. I know he was on antibiotcs for months. Now it is 2012...he went to infectious disease specialist (one appt) and was tested negative for staph. So they did not see him again. My son, gets upset with every pimple, and feels lumps...like a gummy moveable sac under his skin on hip and both buttocks...and he thinks the MRSA is inside his body. So, I took him back to Family DR. and he perscribed Terbinafine & Sulfameh/Trimethoprim. On it now...but my son's question was never answered.
What are those gummy sacs under skin on buttocks where previous boils were. He also currently has rash of small red bumps on groin near inner thigh. The infectious disease DR referred him back to Family DR. What is going on? And if he doesn't have MRSA, why is my son back on these Antibiotics? What is up with those lumpy-gummy sacs under his skin? Is it MRSA penetrated under skin level? Are the nose cultures reliable for testing this with the negative test results for Staph? Sincerely, MOM concerned

This is but natural for every adolescent or young adult to be concerned of a pimple or infection. Since this has affected his way of life, he was out of school and jailed and it has an emotional impact on him. He was truant and there was no mom care when he was jailed. So he lost adolescence joys which is very crucial period. This is the period when a person will decide what would be his career about and then grow up.
Now having said this it is important as a mom and the family doctor to counsel him in all possible ways that there is no infection like MRSA found. MRSA is a really XXXXXXX and persistent organism and it takes too long to clear it and infact the highest generation of antibiotics. So it had taken a long time to clear it.
It may take an evidence proof or more than that for your son to believe that there is no MRSA existent in his body now. Your family doctor and you should be patient to take all his questions and his anxiety away.
The body and mind work together most times. Sometimes the insult to the body is gone but the mind will stick to it and repeatedly traumatize the mind. So it needs healing and you got to assist it. This is about the counseling part.
Are you able to feel the gummy sacs? Since MRSA was treated and the nurse had to dress him regularly I guess it took more than the usual months times to completely heal. There is fibrosis during healing and the buttocks are full of muscles and fat. The fat does not takes its round shape during this process and remains like a gummy sac. It loses its round contour as well. So when your son sits he has the feel yet.
Regarding the new bumps it may not be related to the previous infection. THis may not be hard MRSA. Hence you can get it treated with your family doctor. These kind of infections require antibiotics like SMX/TMP and Terbinafine. Yes the nose cultures are reliable.
Each time you visit the family doctor request him to speak to your son and counsel him about the true nature of the past infection and how does it heel. If your family doctor is not doing so you got to look for a new one who is patient enough.

Thank you for your kindness. My son wants to know how long these fatty deposits will remain? So are you saying it cannot be MRSA under his skin (the gummy-like sac he feels under his skin), since he tested negative for any Staph? You are saying it's just the way the body heals?Can he rest assured that he doesn't have the MRSA at this time since the reports were all negative? The family doctor told him to call if the boils return; so does this mean the MRSA could come back again at a later time? He says he has some pimples that never go away. He thinks the MRSA is back with any pimple. So, in the future; should he call the doctor only if it is a boil type? I hope the MRSA is over, and never returns. Fatty deposits will remain there for quite sometime. Suppose you keep a natural cotton mattress in rain for few days and then dry it. The mattress loses its original contour and takes a different shape with bumps. Once you keep using it will try to get back a shape (may not be to the original smoothness) and resist further change at some time. It is the way the fat heals.
I do not think he has MRSA (Methycillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) in his body since he was tested negative.
MRSA can recur but cleanliness and good immunity can stop its recurrence.
Do as your doctor say, call him when there is a boil. Please note that not all boils are caused by MRSA. There are multiple bacteria that cause it. But we need to investigate with a swab if it is MRSA.
