The Specimen Consists Of Macrophages And Colloid With Follicular Cells
Question: The specimen consists of macrophages and colloid with follicular cells including Hurthle cells. Some groups show nuclear enlargement and overlapping interpreted as atypia of uncertain significance/follicular lesion of uncertain significance. This is what my thyroid biopsy showed. My genetic testing has been sent off to Afirma but I see a surgeon for a consultation before my Afirma results will be back. What is your opinion regarding this issue?
Brief Answer:
ABOUT THYROID NODULE BIOPSY;
Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking!
I have gone carefully through your concern.
Is this a Fine needle aspiration result or a biopsy result?
If this is a fine needle aspiration result, it means that the characteristics of the nodule are suspicious for malignancy and depending on ultrasound characteristics and the dimensions of the nodule the endocrinologist decides rather you need thyroidectomy or not.
If this is a post-operative biopsy result, there is no conclusion. The physician in charge should write the final diagnosis.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
