Question: Hello Doctor, I suffer from gouty arthritis(Without Pain but persistent stiffness in one foot all fingers) and high uric acid hovering around 8 at every alternate month usually so i take febuxostat 40 for 1 month ( following the advice of an orthopedic who first diagnosed and suggested) which bring normalcy to everything. However, i wanna know about the duration of febuxostat, shall i take it as per need or it should be done in continuation for months? Usually 1 month febuxostat brings down my uric acid level by 2 mg/dl. I mean to ask, are there any risk of developing resistance in case of this medicine due to taking and stopping it abruptly anytime????? Thanks

Brief Answer:
You can stop using febuxostat after the uric acid levels normalize.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Febuxostat is used to lower the serum uric acid levels. You can take it for 4-6 weeks and then after the symptoms subside and the uric acid levels decrease it can be stopped. It is not a steroid based drug, so you can stop it abruptly also. It is best to restart it only after consulting your orthopedician and getting the uric acid levels evaluated.
Avoiding the use of pulses, meat and alcohol will help in controlling the uric acid levels.
I hope this answers your query.

Thanks a lot doctor for clarifying and explaining . One query i had regarding foot fingers stiffness, doctor usually suggest Aceclofenac and NSAIDs for that but in my case its been non- effective at all, as i dont have pain, inflammation nor does it help with stiffness per se moreover these medicines irritates my stomach lining leading to gastritis. Could you please recommend any medicine for just curing Stiffness ? Its just discomfort upon bending then but no pain offcourse. I can literally feel as if Foot fingers bone joints swelled up inside.

Brief Answer:
Hot compress, local analgesic gel and physiotherapy will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Since you do not have pain, taking pain killers will not help you much. The stiffness will decrease with hot compress, massage with local analgesic gel like Volini gel and regular exercise of the joints under the guidance of a physiotherapist. Pain killers can only provide a temporary relief.
Hope this answer is helpful.
