Question: These are my mother%E2%80%99s routine test results from last year. She has been taking Thyronorm 25 mcg and Aztor 10 since 2 years but it still shows abnormal values for TSH and lipoprotein/cholesterol. Our GP said not to worry about it and didn%E2%80%99t change anything. Do we really have reason not to worry? My mother is experiencing a lot of hairfall since she started taking Thyronorm.

Also, what about the other abnormal findings.. should we do anything about it?

Brief Answer:
Repeat the blood tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and your attached report.
I can understand your concern.

The test results show Microcytic anemia,Impared glucose tolerance, possible inflammation or infection in the body(High RSR),high cholesterol HDL ratio or a higher risk of heart attack ,25 hydroxy vit D insifficiency,Possible liver damage(high GGT and hypothyroidism(High TSH).

Hairloss can be related to hypothyroidism. The dosis of Thyronorm is adjusted according to the TSH test result,6 weeks after you start the treatement with Thyronorm.

The test were done on XXXXXXX 2019.(last year)
In your mother s case it is very important to see recent test results.

My advice for your mother is to repeat these tests:
Complete blood count test,
iron test,
HbA1C test,
TSH test ,
lipid panel test,
ALT,AST,GGT
25 hydroxy OH Vit D.
ESR and CRP test

Let me know the result and i will be happy to help you.
Wish you good health.

Hi Dr.. is it okay to wait until August-September to repeat these tests? She is avoiding going anywhere outside due to the coronavirus right now

Brief Answer:
Blood works can not wait.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

In my opinion,it is late to wait august or september for the tests.
Your mother may need to adjust or even change the medications for a proper treatement.

During the COVID-19 public health crisis, the hospitals and the laboratories have taken more precautions.
My advice is to make an appointment( so you’re not waiting in the waiting room for extended periods of time) to a local laboratory that has strong safety procedures in place to protect patients from coming into contact with any COVID 19 infection.

Blood works can not wait.
Let me know the results and i will be happy to guide you further.
Regards.

Thanks Dr. I just had one last question that I forgot to ask before.

My mother takes daily cholesterol and thyroid medications named Aztor 10 and Thyronorm 25 mcg that we purchase from XXXXXXX every year on our yearly visit. Now all her medicines are with me in Canada, but she is in the US with my father and almost out of her cholesterol tablets (she only has 2 left).

I can ship them to her but it would take 4-5 days to reach her. Do you think it%E2%80%99s okay for her to skip 3-4 doses of cholesterol?

If not, I was thinking of a way to get this medicine in the US by downloading an online medical app like MDLIVE and getting an online prescription from a US doctor for an identical medicine in US. I think Aztor-10 is atorvastatin and would be sold in the US under a different brand name.

Do you think it%E2%80%99s a better idea to procure an identical medicine immediately rather than my mother waiting 4-5 days for the Aztor-10 to be shipped by me and skipping doses in the interim?

Also, will there by any side effects of using a different medicine? Or would it be exactly the same just under a different brand name?

Brief Answer:
I suggest taking atorvastatin exactly as prescribed by your mother's doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

No, it is not fatal to skip 3 or 4 doses of atorvastatin.
Atorvastatin is the most potent statin and has a long half-life. Therefore, atorvastatin given on alternate days may be reasonable and cost-effective, particularly in hypercholesterolemia patients.

Anyway, my advice is to take atorvastatin exactly as prescribed by your mother s doctor, 1 tab every day, and at the same time each day.

I need more info to deduct the risk of skipping some doses of atorvastatin:
1) the recent cholesterol and LDL level (do we have other lipid test results apart from in XXXXXXX 2019?
2) does your mother have any cardiovascular diseases?

Using a different brand name of atorvastatin probably will not have side effects as long as it is the same generic medicine.

Hope this is helpful.
Regards
