Thursday Night I Hit The Back Of My Head Against

default

Question: Thursday night I hit the back of my head against one of my dressers. I got no nausea/vomiting, I didn't black out, etc. The only thing I have is a headache at the back of head where I hit & other parts are hurting. It feels like a tight band around my head & heavy. I went to the urgent care on Saturday and was prescribed 800mg ibuprofen. In addition she did a neuro exam. Will these headaches eventually subside? Would my symptoms worse if anything serious?

Brief Answer:
Headaches should subside within a few weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor.

It sounds like you had mild injury without any signs of concussion or anything else serious, so I agree with the urgent care doctor that a head CT would not be necessary at this point, and the headache is almost certainly benign and related to the mild trauma. It may take a few weeks for the headache to completely subside, but they should get less painful and less frequent over the next several days. If you were to have any confusion, disorientation, weakness in any area of your body or slurred speech, seizures, or significant worsening of your headache, these may be signs there is something else going on and a CT scan of the head would probably be warranted. But I would expect that this will eventually improve until it completely goes away in a few weeks.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
